World IBD Day – raising awareness for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

World IBD Day has come around again! Every year on the 19th May the world unites to raise awareness and fight against inflammatory bowel disease, including both Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Throughout the UK, 300,000 people are living with irritable bowel disease (IBD) and with currently no known cure or cause, it’s so important that we come together to help make more people aware of what the disease is and the effect it has on day-to-day life!

Since IBD day is all about raising awareness and bringing the community together, we thought we’d share some simple ways in which you can help on World IBD Day.

Use the Power of Social Media

Since social media plays a massive part in most peoples lives, it’s the perfect platform to help raise awareness of almost anything! So this World IBD Day, share your story of Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis with your social media friends and followers, or if you’re lucky enough to be unaffected by the disease, you can always share other people’s posts that you come across. Each year the hashtags #WorldIBDDay and #UnitedWeStand are used for any posts regarding Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, so get sharing and do your part to raise awareness on the 19th May!

Open up to Others

We know it can be nerve-wracking, but opening up to others and sharing your experiences of IBD can go a long way to helping others in the same boat and raising overall awareness. Each person with IBD will have their own unique experiences, so the more stories we can get, the more we can learn about the disease. And it goes without saying that sharing your experiences with others is a fantastic way of raising awareness.

Go to a Local Event

There are so many different events planned throughout the country for this years IBD Day, so why not go along to one near you? You’ll be able to support an amazing cause and drive awareness at the same time. Plus, it’s a great way to meet others who understand what you’re going through and who face the same challenges that you are.

Dress for the Occasion

The colour purple is used as a symbol of awareness and support for those living with Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, so find something purple to wear on the 19th of May to help drive some awareness for IBD!
